ICANN new domain name applications are now being accepted. The topic of new generic top level domains has been a hot topic of discussion for quite some time. Some still feel that the issue has not be investigated completely and are not sure ICANN (International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) should even be moving forward, nonetheless, ICANN is accepting applications and has been since mid January. ICANN reports that more than 100 groups have submitted applications thus far.

Currently there are only 22 generic top level domains (gTLD) available including .com, gov. .edu, etc. ICANN’s decision to expand this offering to include virtually any word, including those with non-Latin characters (Arabic, Chinese, etc), as part of the gTLD is a hotly debated topic. The new domain name application process can be completed online through a system developed by ICANN and new domain name applications will be accepted through the online system until March 29th, 2012. Each applicant can apply for up to 50 new generic top-level domains but each name applied for comes with a hefty price tag of $185,000! In an effort to allow developing countries the opportunity to apply, financial assistance is available for groups that qualify. Once all the applications are received ICANN will have the huge responsibility of determining the financial and operational ability to operate the new domain name registry.

So why are the ICANN new domain name applications a big deal and why wouldn’t someone want them? First off, this is opening up the Internet to a whole new world, so to speak. Anything from .car to .pizza or anything one can imagine is a possible new gTLD. This seems like a great option because all too often someone goes to register a desired domain name only to find the best domain name for his business is unavailable, sometimes a suitable alternative is available like myname.net when myname.com was not available. Having a very specific domain name that is related to your keywords and/or business is critical for search engine ranking, website optimization, and for many other reasons. However, this can also cause problems because big companies are already having to purchase multiple domains just to keep others from creating a website with the same or very similar names to pick up business or scam people that type in the wrong address. Most often if someone doesn’t know the exact domain they will type the company name and then .com because this is the most common top level domain name. But if someone else registered and created a website with the same company name at .net; someone may happen upon this website unintentionally. Other problems like common misspellings, such as someone registering htomail.com, knowing that many people mistype the address when in a hurry, are taking advantage of this to scam users.

While there are copyright and trademark laws that protect a company’s name, it is not always easy to enforce these laws, especially in an online community that spans the world where the laws and regulations are not always the same. In some ways these new domains will help a company or industry create a more targeted domain, something like ford.car is relevant but if another option is ford.truck or ford.cars or even buy.ford, as you can see the possibilities become endless and the company is left with no way to make sure that every possible domain is going to direct website traffic to the website they want. Obviously, there are still a lot of details to be worked out and a lot of questions being asked, but ICANN assures the online community that all of these issues will be addressed and that they will proceed with a great deal of caution and care to prevent as many problems as possible.

For those that miss this first round of ICANN new domain name applications, ICANN Is already saying the will have another round of domain name applications that will be accepted in the future. Naturally, ICANN is not giving a set time for this, or even a set time for when the approved new generic top level domains will be available, although speculations are that it could be at least a year from the time they stop taking new domain name applications. We will be keeping an eye on this issue as things progress and keep you updated on the latest. To register a domain name now, we recommend GoDaddy domains.

gTLD (Generic Top Level Domains) is a category of top level domains like .com, .edu, .net and .org. These are the domain names that were created early in the development of the domain name registration system. Some of them are restricted and have to meet certain guidelines for someone to register a domain under a specific generic top level domain name. Some of these are more specific types of top level domains like a ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domain) like .us, .ca, .in for United States, Canada, India. These top level domains are typically managed by the country and to register a domain with the ccTLD extension the registrar will have to meet and abide by the requirements and regulations of the domain.

In the types of gTLDs .com, .net. and .org could be registered without restriction. These are the most generic domains that basically anyone can register without having to meet any specific requirements. In the early 2000s it became pretty standard when adopting new top level domains to decide whether it is a sponsored or unsponsored domain. The unsponsored TLD are operated under policies that are set forth by the Global Internet Community through ICANN (International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Sponsored TLDs are specialized and have a sponsor that regulates matters in regard to that particular TLD.

Typically using a generic top level domain is a good idea. Having a domain that ends with .com is the easiest for people to remember. If you are going to be advertising your domain name and expect people to remember it, these gTLDs are the easiest to remember and are the first one that a person will try if they only know your company name and not your website address. One problem with the .com generic top level domain is that the most common, easy to sell domains are already registered. You may be able to buy it from the current owner, but will probably pay a pretty penny. Or it may already be in full use and you may have to find a variation.

Choosing a gTLD may not always be an option, keep in mind that whatever domain you choose it needs to be easy to spell and have some relevance to your business or website. Also using keywords in the domain will help with search engine ranking and search engine optimization. It is fairly common for a major business to register variations of their domain as well. For instance, we will use BigCompany as an example, BigCompany may register both BigCompany.com and BigCompany.org to prevent another company from coming in and registering the BigCompany.org domain and then picking up some of the website traffic that was actually intended for BigCompany. com. In some instances if your business name is spelled in an unusual way (kewl instead of cool) you may want to register the domain with both spellings and do a redirect so that each variation will go to the main site.

There are times that a gTLD is not the best choice so it will depend on your business and the audience you are targeting. For a school .edu is perfect because most people expect that the domain will be with .edu instead of .com or .org. You may have to get a little creative based on what is available but taking some time to research keywords and competition and then optimizing your site with the right keywords will allow you to create a successful site that is easy to find even if your customers don’t know the exact domain name.

The domain transfer policy hasn’t changed a lot over the last few years but for those that are new to the domain name registration world we will review the domain transfer policy as set forth by ICANN (the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). Prior to 2004 there weren’t really any regulations for how a domain transfer was to take place and many individuals found that the domain transfer was nearly impossible simply because everyone had a different idea about how it should happen and what was required. ICANN saw the need for creating a set of “rules” that would make the process the same for everyone.

While individual domain registrars can still set up their own terms and requirements for transferring a domain name registration to or from their service, there are basic guidelines and a process that they and the registered name holders must follow. Before registering a domain name each individual should find out the registrars policy and procedure for transferring a domain before registering any domain. Some domain name registrars will over very low priced domain name registration to get people to register with them and then make it virtually impossible for them to transfer the domain and charge then double or triple the price or more upon renewal of the domain name registration. Cheaper isn’t always better and often those that shop based solely on the cheapest rate he/she can find is going to be in for some surprises down the road. This doesn’t mean to skip the research and just pick someone middle of the road in terms of pricing. One really has to be diligent and ask about the policies and procedures to make sure that the registrar is the right choice for his specific needs.

So what does the domain transfer policy include? Overall it is really pretty basic. ICANN requires that the registrar a domain is being transferred to meets minimum standards as defined by ICANN and that there be express authorization from the registered name holder of the administrative contact for the domain name. The authorization must be made through one of two Standardized Forms of Authorization (FOA) available from the ICANN website. Of course there is a lot more to the whole process and many other things that can be considered but overall the new domain transfer policy has made the whole process much easier. Some argue that it makes domain hijacking too easy and that people will be at risk of domain fraud, someone stealing a domain and transferring it to a new registrar.

There are several measures put into place to protect users against domain hijacking. Domain locking is one of the most widely used methods. Most domain registrars will provide the domain holder the ability to lock a domain so that it can’t be transferred, the domain can be unlocked at anytime by the domain holder so that is can be transferred at his/her request. Some domain registrars charge extra for this service but many offer it for free. Regardless of the domain registrar or web hosting service you are using, be sure to keep your domain registry contact information up-to-date so that you will be aware of any changes or requests made on behalf of your domain name registrations. The domain transfer policy is meant to set a standard for all three parties involved, the domain holder, original domain registrar and the registrar the domain is being transferred to but if you don’t keep your contact info current, the domain name could be transferred without your knowledge.

Bulk domain registration allows a webmaster to register several domains at one time. There are many reasons that one may want to register multiple domains and some of the best domain registrars even offer discount pricing for bulk domain registration. In this article we will take a look at what bulk domain registration is, why one may want to use bulk domain registration, and some of the best places to purchase bulk domains. To get started with bulk domain registration now, visit GoDaddy.

GoDaddy Domain Registration

What is Bulk Domain Registration?

Bulk domain registration is simply purchasing several domain names at one time. A domain name is essential for creating a website, it is the address individuals will need to access your website. There are separate parts of a domain name including the extension, or top level domains, like .com, .org, .net, etc. The price of a domain name is generally determined by the top level domain you want, .com, .co, .net for example are more expensive than a .info or .biz domain name. The second part of the domain is what comes before the top level domain. Typically you will want this to be very specific to what the website is about, make it as short as possible and easy to spell and remember. Many domain registrars will offer discounted pricing for those registering several domains at one time. Some places offer additional bulk domain services like bulk domain transfers, renewing bulk domain registrations, and more. Check with the domain registrar about ID protection as many will offer this service free or at a reduced rate for those purchasing domain names in bulk.

Why use Bulk Domain Registration Service?

There are a number of reasons that one might want to purchase domain names in bulk. For many people revenue online comes from ads and affiliate programs rather than actually selling one’s own products or services. In such cases the business owner will create many sites that relate to several different topics, products, or services. Purchasing multiple domains at a time allows them to register the domains cheaper. Sometimes an individual will want to purchase several domains that are similar to the main domain he/she will be using to sell a product or service. For example if you are selling widgets your main domain may be widgets.com but you may also wish to register widget.com, bestwidgets.com, allwidgets.com or a number of other variations. You may not choose to develop every domain as a full website, but instead redirect the secondary URLs to go to your main domain. This prevents competitors from developing a website offering the same products and making it harder for your website to draw traffic. Others may choose to register bulk domains and develop websites for numerous topics and then sale the site as a completed website already established and ranked in search engines.

Where do I purchase Bulk Domains?

Any domain registrar will allow a user to register multiple domains but some make it much easier than others by offering bulk domain registration tools allowing a user to search up to 500 domains at a time. Each domain will be searched to find out if it is available and if the domain name is not available other alternatives will be offered. Deciding where to register your bulk domains will depend on individual needs. Some registrars are very well known, like GoDaddy, and offer many additional services like web hosting, SSL, website builders, and much more. GoDaddy also offers domain auctions for domains that are already registered but the owner is interested in selling. Many of the best web hosting companies also offer domain registration with their web hosting accounts. Some of them only allow one domain per account while others allow unlimited domains. Check out BlueHost or GoDaddy or visit our site for more domain registrar reviews and domain name registration info to help you find the best bulk domain name registration for your needs.

Have you been searching for a domain name? Is the domain name you want taken? Have you considered using a domain auction? What is a domain auction? This article explains what a domain is, what a domain auction is, and offers tips on getting an aftermarket domain through a domain auction site.

To answer this question, let’s begin by looking at the two components: auction and domain.

An auction is a type of sale in which a good or service is offered for sale to the highest bidder. Auctions may have built-in restrictions on sales, which can include time limits and stipulation of a minimum bid, as well as particular rules for determining the winning bid in any questionable case. Bids may be taken in person, by phone, or via the Internet. An auction house or auctioneer is often employed, as well as an escrow service, which acts to ensure the safe transfer of the payment and the purchase.

In this context, domain refers to a domain name, the identifier for a realm of operation within the Internet. Domain names can have multiple levels, but the ones that are auctioned consist of two parts. One part is the top-level domain (TLD) which may be either a generic (gTLD) domain, such as .com, .net, or .org or a country code top-level domain (ccTLD), such as .us for the United States or .uk for the United Kingdom. The other part of auctioned domain names is the second-level, which is used as the main identifier for the website, and—in the case of ecommerce sites and other business propositions—is often linked to the brand of the site. The “owner” of one of these domain names has control of all the possible sub-domains.

A person who no longer has a use for a domain name or (more likely) who has registered a domain name as an investment, can resell it in the domain aftermarket. A perspicacious investor can reap huge rewards from reselling domain names. Among the most costly sales in the domain aftermarket, the majority are simple second level names with a .com gTLD. These include: autos.com, business.com, candy.com, creditcards.com, sex.com (the most lucrative, which sold for $13 million in 2009), and wine.com. An auction is only one approach to reselling domain names: they can also be listed with a set take-it-or-leave-it price, for example.

Domain auctioning services are offered by some web hosts, as well as by specialized domain auction agencies. A buyer who wants one, and only one, particular domain name is limited to the sales approach that the seller chooses, so unless he or she can make an offer that convinces the seller to remove the domain name from the auction, the buyer will have to deal with all of the varied auction tactics, such as last second bids.

Three of the most prominent domain name auction sites are GoDaddy.com Auctions, SEDO, and AfterNIC. If you are considering buying or selling at an auction, following these sites for at least several weeks is valuable in gaining a sense of how the system works. You can also see the types of domains that are on offer. You are likely to find one and two-word .com domains and acronym .com domains are in the majority, so if you are looking for a particular TLD or a non-English domain, you may find that some auction houses are more useful to you than others.

What Are International or Internationalized Domain Names?

Internationalized Domain Names, abbreviated IDN, are a 2003 development to the domain name systems. Prior to 2003, only ASCII characters were supported in domain names. The specification released in 2003 (IDNA2003) supported most Unicode characters for domain names. An update in (IDNA2008) approved in 2010 is a revision of the 2003 specification but it is not completely backward compatible.

International Domain Names are currently supported by both browsers and email programs, allowing people to use URLs and links that are fully in their native languages. Because the Unicode is transformed into ASCII internally, there is no change to the system itself, which remains an ASCII-based system. Examples of Unicode letters that became possible with IDNs include German umlauts, and Chinese characters.

IDN Variants

With the new IDNs, there are some specific problems. For example, there are two scripts in Chinese: one traditional and one simplified. If someone wants to register a domain name in one, he or she will be prevented if it is already registered in the other, but there is no way for the domain name registrar to know this until the registration is attempted and the existence of the variant throws up an error message.

IDN Language Tags

It’s important to match the domain name to the chosen language tag and include characters from only one language or language variant in the domain name. These errors also are not detected by the domain search and are only revealed when registration is attempted.

According to DynaDot, VeriSign imposed restrictions on characters that are allowed with the English and German language tags on .com and .net registrations. English domains are, for the moment, limited to the characters a through z, 0 through 9, and the hyphen -. German domains are limited to the characters a through z, 0 through 9, the hyphen -, and three vowels with umlauts—ä, ü, ö. The German letter Eszett or scharfes S—ß is not permitted

IDN and Phishing

The introduction of IDN has led to a type of phishing attack that uses “homograph attacks.” To alert web users of the possibility of a homograph attack, browsers display the Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) using punycode. This warns the user to consider whether the site may be fake.

What Is Punycode?

Punycode is a method of translating international domain names into ASCII characters, so that they only use the character set a through z, 0 through 9, and hyphens, or dashes. When a non-ASCII character is found, it is skipped and another character or characters added to the end of the word using an algorithm called Bootstring. The transformation is such that it can be reversed. Additional characters may also be added to the beginning of the string.

Not all domain name registrars offer a variety of International domain names. However, GoDaddy.com handles a number of domain name services not offered by other providers. Click Here to get GoDaddy International Domain Names.

Are you looking for a domain name? Not sure where to find an available domain name? This article not only explains what available domain names are but also offers information on how to find available domain names. Keep reading for tips on finding just the right domain name.

What Are Available Domain Names?

Available domain names are new (never been used) domain names that have never been registered, as well as domain names that have been registered, but are again available for registration through one or another source. The latter are referred to as aftermarket domain names.

Where Do You Find Available Domain Names?

If you are seeking an unregistered domain name, using the WHOIS database is the way to go. The WHOIS database lists every registered domain name anywhere in the world, and can be searched through a tool available on any web hosting site. The tool generally has three parts.

To the far left is the domain name you are considering, the part that comes before the dot. So, for example, mynewwebsite

In the middle is a drop-down menu or other mechanism that allows you to select the top-level domain (TLD) also called the extension. This list will inlcude all the TLDs that the particular webhost is able to register. For example, GoDaddy’s list includes:.com, .co, .info, .net, .org, .me, .mobi, .us, .biz, .ca, .mx, .tv, .ws, .ag, .com.ag, .net.ag, .org.ag, .am, .asia, .at, .be, .com.br, .net.br, .bz, .com.bz, .net.bz, .cc, .cn, .com.cn, .net.cn, .org.cn, .com.co, .net.co, .nom.co, .de, .es, .com.es, .nom.es, .eu, .fm, .fr, .gs, .in, .co.in, .firm.in, .gen.in, .ind.in, .net.in, .org.in, .it, .jobs, .jp, .ms, .com.mx, .name, .nl, nu, .co.nz, .net.nz, .org.nz, .se, .tc, .tk, .tw, .com.tw, .idv.tw, .org.tw, .co.uk, .me.uk, .org.uk, .vg, .sc, .com.sc, .net.sc, .org.sc

To the far right is the search button, which you click after having made your other selections.

If you complete a search for a website that is available, a notice that the site is available will appear. I received this notice upon searching for pxgsz.com—a domain name with limited practical use. The search also offered other options using pxgsz with alternative TLDS, like .co and .info and .net.

If you complete a search for a website that is already registered, like mynewwebsite.com, the registration will appear (you may have to type an access code to prove that you are not a spammer). When the registration already exists, the tool will provide you with recommendations for the same domain name with alternative extensions and suggestions for similar domains that are available. In this case, I was offered:

mynewwebsiteonline.com

mynewwebsitestore.com

bestmynewwebsite.com and

mynewsebsiteblog.com

among others.

If you are interested in aftermarket domain names, go to a reliable aftermarket domain site, for example, Go Daddy Auctions or Sedo.com.

Domain Name Choice Tips

If you have a brand name or registered trademark, it’s likely that you’ll want to use it in your domain name. Fortunately or unfortunately, the domain name registration market is a first-come-first-served market, and if someone somewhere else uses the same name or some prospector registered the name in order to try to sell it at a profit, your first choice may not be available. You can prepare yourself for this a bit by considering what you’re willing to do to get one particular name and/or by brainstorming alternative choices that might suit your aims prior to searching more if your first choice doesn’t pan out. Or, perhaps one of the alternatives offered by the WHOIS tool will prove to be useful.

If nothing else will do but the name you’re set on, you can use the WHOIS tool to find out who has the domain registered and make him, her, or it an offer they can’t refuse . . .

Looking for a GoDaddy domain coupon? GoDaddy domain registrations are already some of the cheapest around and GoDaddy often has special promotions for their domain names right on their site like free privacy protection with the purchase of 6 or more domains and discounts on bulk domain purchases. Webmaster can often find other GoDaddy domain coupons that can knock another 10% of the entire GoDaddy order. Use any of our GoDaddy links to visit the official GoDaddy site and see the 10% discount offer at the top of the site. In addition to the GoDaddy domain coupon webmasters may notice other special offers on related products like web hosting and SSL certificates.

GoDaddy has been a major player in the web hosting and Internet services industry for many years. Because of their extensive advertising efforts, like the GoDaddy SuperBowl commercials and Las Vegas billboards, GoDaddy is fairly well known even outside of the web hosting industry. In addition to some of the best deals on web hosting, GoDaddy offers both Windows and Linux hosting platforms, they also offer many complimentary services that webmasters may need including email services, website building tools, search engine optimization tools and management options, SSL certificates and other security options to help protect every GoDaddy website, and much more.

Use our GoDaddy links to take advantage of this GoDaddy domain coupon. For the webmaster not sure of all the specifics of domain name registration the GoDaddy site offers several videos explaining “why you need a domain”, “how you can use a domain” and many others containing information on everything from navigating the GoDaddy website to why GoDaddy is a good choice for web hosting (and it doesn’t hurt that they all feature the hot GoDaddy girls). GoDaddy domain names start as low as $1.99 for a .info domain (on the current promotion). GoDaddy offers many additional domain extensions that will work great for different types of businesses as well as global markets current GoDaddy domain promotions include:

.asia at $19.99 per year

.biz for $5.99 per year

.ca $12.99 per year

.co now just $14.99 per year (great for global businesses)

.com for $11.99 per year

.me now just $9.99 per year

.mobi $6.99 per year

.net domains for $9.99 per year

.org $9.99 per year (great for non profit organizations)

.tv domains for $29.99

.us for $4.99

.ws for $14.99

Choosing a domain extension that is related to your industry and the market you are trying to reach can help others remember your domain name and help with search engine optimization. While .com is very generic and the easiest for people to remember, there are so many registered .com domains that finding a relevant domain name that is not too long or hard to remember that is still available can be very difficult. Using an alternate domain extension like .us can open up many new possibilities and is very easy to remember. Just be sure to use the .us in all your branding so that someone not familiar with your website doesn’t automatically assume it is a .com site. If you are set on a .com domain be sure and check out the GoDaddy domain auctions to see if a .com you want is for sale.

A parked domain is a term that is used to describe an inactive domain that is being reserved for later use or one that points to another existing domain. There are also two different types or uses of a parked domain name. Monetized parked domain names are generally used as a landing page for web visitors. On such a page will be tons of advertisements or pay-per-click links as well as search boxes on the page. It has the look of a real website, but instead it just directs you to other pages and links to advertisements. On the other hand, there are also non-monetized parked domains. In this situation, the website is mostly inactive, under construction or maintenance or is a placeholder for another website. Let’s take a look at the difference between these types of parked domains.

Monetized parked domains:
These kinds of parked domains are typically purchases specifically for the purpose of using ad networking as a way to make a straight profit on the website. These ad networks will typically provide the pay-per-click types of ads. This is the type of ad similar to a pay-per impression advertising initiative that award the domain owner money every time the ad is clicked on or the ad successfully takes the visitor to the linked website. The way it works is that the domain owner must have a place or a parking page to redirect the domain to the parking page and let it sit. Hence the term, parked domain. This makes it easy for the domain owner, who may be working with hundreds of domains, to monetize all of them.

Non-monetized parked domains:
This is a different type of domain, but for its purpose, is also considered to be a parked domain. They are usually just a website that is still under construction or is being changed. Parked domains like these will often feature an under construction web page for the owner to use during this time. This is a common occurrence in situations when a domain is registered, but the domain name server has not yet changed to the owner’s server. Usually the domain registrar will put up ads on the web page with the indication that the domain is now registered. Using a parked domain in this situation allows web domain owners to let their users know that the website is simply down for a period of time but is not expired. Some website owners will want to put a date of expected completion on the parked domain so web visitors will know when they can come back to the finished website.

Along with the idea of parked domains, there is also the practice of cybersquatting. Some parked domains will be used for this purpose to gain profits from known brands, companies and other bad faith reasons. It is not considered to be the most ethical of Internet practices. Many times the cyber squatting domains will build a domain that is really close in name or product brand to an already-existing product. This will draw visitors expecting to find the actual product and instead will find dozens of ads that can be clicked on to give the domain owner money. Parked domains will also be used in cases of expiring domains. The domain registrar might place a parked domain on domains that are expiring because the website expiration process can be a lengthy one.
