Transferring a Domain Name

Backorder Domain Names
When a domain name expires, it is not immediately up for purchase. The previous owner still has time to keep his or her name, for 40 days after the expiration date the site will be shut down but they still have the ability to renew their claim on the name. There is an additional 30 day redemption period that the name must go through after the initial 40 day period. The previous owner can still renew, but most times it will be for a higher fee. Once the redemption period ends, the domain name is deleted this process takes 5 days. So from the day a website expires it actually takes 75 days before it is available.
Even if you have back ordered a domain name, there is no guarantee that you will get it. Multiple people may have that domain name on backorder. During the time when the website is being deleted you can try to register it but you may get beat out by companies that specialize in claiming domain names. A few of these are GoDaddy, Snapnames.com, Network Solutions and Pool.com.
Domain names which have expired and placed on backorder cannot just be purchased like an original one. Instead, they are placed up for auction. There are companies which can be hired to place these bids for you. A bid must be placed on each domain name even if only one person is interested in aquiring it. The company that you enlist to help you get your domain name will inform you of when someone else has bid and this gives you the oportunity to place a higher bid.
If no one else has placed a bid for the domain name you can state how much you want to pay for it. If other people are bidding the price can increase very quickly. In the auction process you may easily end up paying between $50 and $500. If someone is very interested in the domain name the price may be much higher though.
Placing a domain name on backorder in no way guarantees that you will actually get the name that you want or for the price you orginally paid for the back order.

JustHost Offers Free Domain Name for LIFE
- Unlimited Web Space
- Unlimited Monthly Transfer
- Unlimited Domain Hosting
- Unlimited E-Mail Accounts
- Unlimited MySQL Databases
- FREE Site Builder
- FREE Instant Setup
- FREE Domain for Life
Many web hosting companies offer you a free domain name, but if you do not read the fine print in your contract you may have to pay additional fees after the first year in order to keep that domain. In comparison, JustHost you do not have to worry about being charged additional fees, or fear the prices for domains will increase because your domain will remain FREE FOR LIFE.
The biggest difference between the Just Plan and the Just Plan Premium is that with the JustPlan you get one domain name for life, and (for just a bit more) the JustPlan Premium offers you three domain names for life.
The other thing we found interesting, and a bit of a consumer confidence builder, is the fact that JustHost doesn't just offer a 30 day, 60 day, or 90 day money back guarantee like most other hosting companies, they are so confident in their products and services they are willing to offer an "ANYTIME money back guarantee". And according to their site this not only means "anytime" but for "any reason". Sooo..."anytime" you want to cancel they will refund you any unused portion of your monthly fees.

Top Level Domains (TLD's)
Every URL on the Internet is actually just a mask for and IP number. IP numbers are your Internet Protocol and everyone has a different IP address. This is how your computer is identified by sites. Ever wonder how a site remembers your settings? It knows your IP and places a cookie in your system so that it remembers what you were doing. IP numbers are just a string of numbers and dots and they would be a mess to remember for all of us. Think about how many different URL's you know by heart and then think about what you would do if they were all just numbers and dots. Do you think you could still remember all of them quite as well and as quickly? Doubtful. So, we have domain names to hide the IP and give us something memorable and hopefully catchy. This system of naming is actually a way of organizing the Internet and is actually strictly supervised.
A top level domain is a fully qualified domain name. ICANN (the Internet Cooperation of Assigned Names and Numbers) came up with categories to organize the domains. For top level domains there are three categories.
- Country Top Level Domains: These domain names are country specific. ICANN has over 250 assignments for countries. These are indicated by endings such as .us (United States), .ca (Canada) and obviously the list goes on.
- Generic Top Level Domains: These are domain names used for general purposes such as .com or .net. These domains are much more common that the cTLD's (country top level domains). In the 1980's the Internet boom was happening and there were basically six general gTLD's. These were .com, .gov, .edu, .int, .mil, .org and .net. Some are self explanatory like that .gov is for government agencies. In the beginning .org had to be for non-profit organizations and that has changed, these are now open to everyone.
- Special Top Level Domains: The Internet Architecture Board regulates this as it has to do with the .arpa domains. These deal with computer infrastructures and are only open to certain technical people.

Transferring a Domain Name
Transferring your domain to a new domain registrar:
You may find that you want to put all of your domains that you have accumulated with one registrar. Or you may have found that the registrar that you originally bought the domain from does not offer other services that you need. It is possible to transfer this domain to the registrar of your choice. It will be easier for you if you will use the same registrar for all of your domains if possible because you will have everything in one spot. We do realize that this is not always a viable solution.
First you need to look up your domain on whois.net and make sure the information is correct, especially the e-mail address. Second, you will need your current registrars authentication code. Third, make sure your registration does not have a lock on it. Fourth, get in touch with your new registrar and make sure they know your authentication code and which services you are interested in having. Fifth, the registrars will communicate and you will be e-mailed (thus, the importance of the e-mail address being correct on whois.net) to verify that you have initiated this transfer. Follow the steps given in the e-mail, you may have a process to go through to make this all happen. It is generally very easy but may take several days up to a few weeks. Be sure that your domain is not set to expire during this time or you will run into a possible mess.
Make sure that you are good to go with the registrar you use for 60 days. You cannot sell the domain name or do anything else as far as transferring it for 60 days.
If you are transferring your domain name to a new owner (selling a domain name):
You may consider using a domain broker because they will most likely help you through this process. Domain escrow services are also available should they be needed. You will have to see what each company has as procedures but in general you will need to: First, make the agreement with the buyer and have the funds transferred to the escrow company. Second, the seller initiates the transfer with the original registrar. Third, the buyer confirms the transfer. Fourth, the transaction is verified by the escrow company and the funds are released to the seller.
Be careful that you do not try to acquire names that are close to trademarked names with the intent to profit on this. It is not legal business practice.

Domain Names for Sale
- Know the value of your domain name. You can do this by getting a pre-appraisal or a domain name appraisal. When assessing your domain name value for yourself keep in mind that top level domains are worth more, .com addresses are a great example of addresses that are worth more. The shorter the name, the better. Is the domain name easy to use, type in, and remember? The easier, the more you will get for our domain.
Is there a market for this name? Does it reflect any particular business or interest that someone may be seeking after? These are all things to keep in mind when assessing the value of your domain name. This is also what a domain name appraisal will look at. - When you have determined a fair asking price for your domain name you need to look at placing it on sites for aftermarket domain name sales. Services like Afternic.com and TDNAM.com are some great places to list your domain for sale. If you are not wanting to go the conventional route you may look up forums and discussion threads pertaining to aftermarket domain name sales and see if there is anyone out there looking for a domain name like the one you have. This is also a great place to just mention that you have a domain name for sale.
- Companies like GoDaddy.com offer a for sale page for domain names. You may not get results with just this method but if you use it with the services listed above you may get better traffic and some interest. The key is getting as many people to see your domain name as possible. Eventually you may find the right buyer. Just be sure your price is right when that person comes along. It is good to predetermine what the lowest price you will take is right off the bat.
